. . . being a pastor in today’s world is both a high calling and a terrible burden. (Every pastor’s spouse knows it too.) The number one problem in ministry is burnout; and no wonder—for all the joys of ministry life, every ministry couple can understand what Paul meant by “the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches” (2 Cor. 11:28). Time pressure, financial struggles, conflict, opposition, fruitlessness, and a hundred other discouragements all take their toll. And ironically, the challenges often loom largest in smaller churches.
Just as Jesus took time away with his disciples, ministry couples need opportunities to recharge and refocus. The Black Hills Shepherds Retreat offers just such an opportunity—a mix of getting away and sharpening the saw—all in an intimate setting in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota.
